One speaks to everyone one meets on the trail and one usually stops and chats awhile. The mountaineer can give you information about the country, country people from the hot valleys can tell you how terrible the trails are; city people and tourists will ask: What's the news? But this is true: I never in all my ten years of mountaineering ever met a man on the trail that did not know something I did not know!

Went over this evening to the Harvey Camp and soon it was proposed that we all go down across the meadow to the Soda Spring. Fred Harvey got pine sticks for torches and soon we filed away, each carrying a flaming knot, and trooped across the meadow to the spring. Mrs Harvey had some sirup for the purpose so we had flavored soda water! The spring is partly spoiled by the meadow being so abundantly irrigated. Mrs. Harvey has lived for 25 years in what I would call the frontier, has crossed the Colorado Desert 14 times, is well-informed, is a good observer and is generally
