Independence to

Left Independence at 1:00 o'clock, having had dinner at the Norman House. South towards the Alabama Hills we passed small streams from the High Sierras, but then there were no more and on account of the lack of water and the exceeding
heat and dryness I suffered considerably. At first my mouth got sticky and "doughy", then an intense dryness or parched feeling came, as if the tongue and other organs had actually been subjected to fire. I became

weaker and weaker and rested frequently. Finally about a
quarter-of-an-hour before dusk I saw green, - beautiful
green trees rising from the rocky sage-brush vista of
the Alabama Hills. They were but one-third of a mile away
when I saw them and this renewed my strength wonderfully and I hurried to the beautiful stream of cool rushing Sierra water.
This night we had adventures galore. Sierra was staked; she
got loose at midnight and followed Hot Haste (hobbled) on
the back trail. Stone heard her go by the camp and rushed
