Independence

In camp, at Mr. John Baxter's place. He has a rather large
ranch, a great deal of alfalfa which he cuts for hay and from the blossoms of which the main honey flow for his
bees comes. Mr Baxter "raises" about 2 tons of
honey per year. Sometimes 3 tons.

Independence is the county seat of Inyo Co. The population - judging from the signs is largely composed
of saloon - keepers and lawyers.

July 17, 1900.

While here I made use of the horse of Mr. S.W. Austin
who is the U.S. Land Agent at Independence. I met him
on the trail, on the very crest of the Sierras. He said he
would have been glad to accompany me back to his home and talk botany but for Mrs Austin being with him.
Mr. Austin is doing very efficient work in this region. He graduated U.C. '86.
I was given a letter to Mr. Wm. Deby, Dis't Atty, who
was very kind to me; introduced me to Mr. Gibbons, The Sheriff and to all the other officials about the Court House.
