Se foothills at end Santa Rosa Mts., (Silent Canon) cont. from p. 57.-- the whir of their wings almost as sweet and clear as a bell in the dead calm, the utter quiet, the level stillness of the desert canons. --We go to Mecca; buy a steak; take on water; go se on the Brawley road and run too far (and too fast) to see the seventeen Palms trail, come back at same pace (too fast) and go up a wash on the say-so of a young fellow at one of the road-working camp. We follow up this wash eight miles, in a canon. The way is often difficult. Four times we have to clear a path; three of these times to remove very soft sandstone which has fallen from the walls into the bottom of the wash. We reach a point where we stop. I judge this is about 1000 feet (at least) and under (NE) of the highest point (2696 ft.) a Point north of Seventeen Palms See Indio Topog Map. We are in the foothills of the SE end of the Santa Rosa Range. I call the canon
