There was a long delay in f_getting ashore and through the customs. We had the usual experience with native porters and guides. A guide was bargained with to take us to the hotel for _1.50. When we were through the customs the carriage stopped and he demanded _1.50 more for the hotel, saying that the bargain was for the custom-house. We "compromised" by paying _2.50 and then 5 piastres more to a second hotel and finally landed at the Hotel Windsor, a clean and well-fitted place, the charges moderate for Egypt, _2.50 for room and breakfast.

As usual I found great delight in the street scenes, the strange foods marketed on [?] carts u the streets

and the great variety of oriental costume. The foreign merchants are numerous and appear to be chiefly French. A very solid-looking building in the very heart of the city is marked "British Garrison". St. MArk's Church (English) is a solid edifice in the heart of the city with ample ground; it is well decorated; and is one of the signs of the permanency of the British hold on Egypt; for this church was built over 50 years ago I think.

Early this morning I opened my balcony window and looked down the street. A group of Arabs were coming, walking with a smooth flowing grace that is peculiar to them and foreign to us. A street [?ster] carries a great flat or tray-like basket of breads and foodstuffs
