close the tube as with a fine mesh or barrier. Plants erect, freely branched, 2 to 3 ft. h.
No. 10,029 Potamogeton nodosus Poir. apud Lam. Stamens 8; 2 anthers beneath each sepal. Sepal somewhat shield-shaped, remarkably like the scale in a staminate catkin of Cupresus or Pinus, with two stamens inserted on each claw. The stamens are so "fat" that they appear from the outside to be inserted lower than the sepals Pistils 4, but 3 or 2 at summit of spike.

No. 10,031. Jussieua californica Jepson = J. repens peploides
Filling the canals for miles and miles between Old River and Middle River. Stems mostly simple or little branched so far as I noticed, 2 to 6 ft. long! These plants must transpire very rapidly, because when lifted out of the water, the leaves began to curl almost instantly, i.e. the emersed leaves. This phenomenon is so marked that the plants might in a way be called "sensitive plants". Stamens 10. Fls. yellow rather showy.
No. 10,032. Typha la
Stems 6 to 7 ft. tall.
