- Insects and native plants.
Eschscholtzia californica often "bleeds" from its root-crown, giving rising to a fluffy whitish or foamy mass, a little like soap suds. This is caused by the attack of the spittle bug, a member of the Cercoptidae.

- Native weeds. Asclepias mexicana is becoming abundant over 10 or 15 acres of the south-west corner of old Broughton tract. This is now prime orchard; and it may be that cultivation helps this species.

_ Even in the youngest flowers the pappus-bristles loosen quickly, so that the exact number is not so easy to make certain; the number appears to be 4.
