Upper pair of filaments scaberulous on upper side, otherwise both pairs glabrous. Upper lip very short, truncatish, recurverd, with cross bands of purple Lower lip purple-dotted and lineate. Calyx-segments almost distinct, equal in length, almost equal in breadth. Wooded ca_on side. All the lobes except the keel erosulate. Upper lip recurved abruptly from throat, at this point with a very marked ridge or sharp crest, which looks fleshy but is not or scarcely.

anth segment. Anthers notched base and apex, 4 1/2 lines long, the staminodia 1 1/2 lines longer, very long and narrow , edges inturned, notched at summit, closely approximate around and concealing anthers. Inner perianth segments 2 1/2 lines broad, much broader (!) than the outer! these latter about 1 1/2 lines wide. Per. tube 4 1/2 lins long, segments 11 1/2 lines long! Anthers yellow; staminodia white; perianth purple. Plants 7 to 26 in. high. FLowers closing at night in vasculum! Baker says they close at night in the field. B. coronaria remains open.
