- A party of us, from Berkeley and Stanford, are here with the idea of interesting some wealthy man in the south in the idea of founding a California Botanical Garden. Our group consists of D. H. Campbell of Stanford, E. D. Merrill, Dr. A. D. Houghton, H. M. Hall, L. R. Abrams and myself. We call upon Henry E. Huntington at his magnificent estate. It was arranged that I was to make the speech - and I made it - but under somewhat difficult conditions. Mr. Huntington has already made his plans for the disposal of his wealth and only listened perfunctorily. Afterwards he took us around his very remarkable garden and also to see the painting in his

mansion - the one hung in his drawing and living rooms. He has large and fine examples of Reynolds, Raeburn, Gainsborough and others. Of course we passed a long time before the "Blue Boy" but all the others were equally representative of the particular master. There is a Raeburn in the hall - a full length portrait of a gentleman with a singularly noble countenance.
After considerable negotiations we went to call on Mr. Edw. [Edward] Doheney. This is just now the hieght of the oil scandal, the "black satchhell" [sic] and all the rest of it. Mr. Doheney is gaurded [sic] like a middle-age baron and naturally sees no one at a time like this. We are left standing outside while gaurds, [sic] detectives and house-
