Berkeley, Nov. 1923.
- Last night a meeting of five of the California Botanic Garden Committee, Webber, Hall, Babcock, Houghton, myself. Webber proposed that in order to raise funds we capitalize the popularity of Burbank's name and start a great popular subscription. Then followed a discussion of Burbank, of the real man, of his foibles and what he has actually accomplished. Webber made some interesting statements, one that Burbank is the best known man, the most widely know man in the United States today, known to a greater number of people. This is very nearly true, possibly quite true. Later on Webber expressed as his judgement that Burbank was not a truly scientific man and as a plant breeder had no real claims to greatness.
[This was about Nov. 25.]

He is to install a forestry exhibit at Los Angeles and wanted any advice. He said that he had talked with Clinton Miller (Regent U.C. by virtue of being President of the Alumni)and that Miller also advised him to come. Miller, he said, had met me on one of my expeditions in the Sierras.
