in advance of cutting them. Inquiry developed that the figures went clear through the board as if stained and not as if eaten by an insect. The fibre or grain was not at all injured. I never before heard of this. The figures were crescent or moonshaped, etc.

Sugar Pine on Howell Mt.
Two or three years ago I was told by someone in St. Helena that a long time ago there had been Sugar Pine on Howell Mountain but that the few trees had been cut out in early days. Mr.

Angwin, Sr, says that he never knew of the existence of Sugar Pine here. He has lived on the mountain 25 years. There are three old sawmills or ruins. One down toward pope Valley, one in the canon at the head of Conn Valley, and another which I did not locate. These sawmills were probably put in in an early day. At least one was doubtless here long before Mr. Angwin's time. If so, the Sugar Pine trees would have been the first treeds to be cut, their timber being so valuable and so easily worked.
