Howell Mt. Mar. 10, 1900.
Such are to be found on the Merril place down toward Pope Valley;
also on the Wells Fargo place in the other direction from Angwins--
southeastward along the range. All this information I have from Lawrence Angwin, from a Humboldt woodsman,
and from a St. Helena blacksmith.
This group on the hotel porch at Angwin's Howell Mountain Resort gave me
all they knew.
The woodsman Blows spoke about fine specimens of the Redwood being flat

[being flat] on one side. Great trunks, after the bark was taken off, looked as if they had been sawed off on one side, so flat and slab were they. When this occurs it is mostly toward the base or altogether I understand, and not high up. One gets curious notes traveling about. Last night in the parlor a lady guest told me of a pine board which a gentleman in Denver showed her which was most curiously marked in patterns. It was said by the owner to be the work of an insect and such pines could be found in Oregon and located
