- Ilex aquifolium - free seeding on Flood Estate, Menlo Park. Also Araucaria imbricata and brasiliensis. Seed must be kept moist in order to germinate.
- Platanus racemosa, material from Visalia, Woolsey, no seeds in the balls; the axes of the racemes with the vascular strands in separate threads having been worked loose from the general stem tissue by wind! (Circa 1897.)

Inverness - February 14, 1900

Pinus muricata - Bishop's Pine - this tree is the most interesting feature about Inverness; it engages the attention wherever one goes. The young trees are good to behold - they suggest young vigorous youths; they are so clean and healthy, so straight and symmetrical. The very old trees are the ones however which give picturesqueness to the country. The most picturesque ones are those with the flattened but thick tops, the very tall trunks either
