Marin Co[unty] - said to have the heaviest rainfall of any county in Calif[ornia]. [Fogs] in early summer. [Winds] in summer; less [wind] in winter.

A[lnus] rubra.
Alders on the beach - large trees - tide water reaches very near their bases

Quercus agrifolia - bark think, the texture peculiar, splits off in chunks as if brittle like taffy. Perhaps this the reason of the peculiar fissuring. Compare bark of Quercus wislizenii.
