Inverness, February 15, 1900

from Inverness postoffice. Mr. Martella, an Italian, has cut out a large alder. I was introduced to Mr. Martella and asked him for a section of the trunk. He generously offered to give me the log but I thought a thin section preferable. Mr. Martella would have cut the section 4 instead of 2 inches but I demurred. As he said: "It didna costa na more". He was delighted to please me and felt exceedingly happy that he had been privileged to give something to the University of California!

Buckeye

Old buckeye trees renew themselves, curiously enough. In the first valley is a tree which must at one time have been gigantic judging from the stump which at the ground is 25 feet around, about 6 feet high, more or less hollow and 1/2 gone above but about 12 or 13 feet around. It bears 23 new limbs, all about of a size and 4 to 6 inches through, scattered over the stump top and down toward the ground on one side a few. There are even a few buds starting from near the base of the warty
