Britten the Ranger:-

Tie your mules with a Bowlin Knot. Then your mule can set back in it as much as he pleases and you can unties it with ease.

In steep brush country tie a rope across the trail and turn your mules loose. In the morning you will find them on the back trail where the rope is.
