Near Smith River Town. Gilbert Creek, n. of Town. from the root-crown each season. A number of sprouts come and serve as foliage shoots but only one of these becomes a reproductive shoot. One gains the ascendancy over the others and I have never seen but one flowering stem in a place and one only sees the other shoots by investigating the base of the plant and noticing the wisp of dried stems. At this time the flowering shoot bears a number of young vegetative buds near the base. These during the winter will grow, make leafy shoots to store reserve for the plant later on. The tap root gives off short stolons which on reaching the surface develop the short-lived leafy shoots as aforesaid and one reprod. shoot which is of course leafy below.
