-The wind which has been blowing with great violence since we came to the side of the main range turned into a rainstorm at dusk last night. This morning the main range, which for days has been banked heavily with fog, is clear and shows snow everywhere along its summits, such as Laguna Mt., etc.

-Cont. no. 8553. Fagonia californica.
Sepals distinct, oblong-ovate, mucronate, the slender mucro abruptly recurved. Only one individual seen.

-Fouquieria splendens. Cor. crimson, its short lobes round-ovate, convolute-reflexed in anthesis; stamens 15, the fils. arising at base from a very long obliquely cut sheath, the edge of which are ciliate. Style 3-cleft half-way. Fils. crimson like the corolla and style: Ovary 3-celled with axile placentae. Ovules several. Sepals roundish ovate with membranous edges, distinct, the aestivation so: [diagram] See p. 42, 43, 65, 73.

Upper lip dotted over whole of unlobed portion. Yellow ridge on lower lip (palate) so strongly in relief as to appear almost like a spur. A distinct but short sac-like spur on lower side cor. tube. Upper leaves appearing narrower than they are because of being conduplicate.

Anthers most distinctly separated on the fil. [drawing]
