Fouquieria splendens. Dutton measures one individual which has been overthrown by storm. It is 22 ft. 6 in. h. The base is a swollen or enlarged globose structure as it appears from above, covered with an impervious parchment-like cortex, this covering a cocoa [?]-like fleshy mass which is plainly a reservoir of food materials and water. The bushes are just beginning to come into full flower. See. p. 66.

-This business of getting down on one's knees is very tiring. In the desert there is no place to get but down. You get down on your knees to put plants into press, to change driers, to tend the cooking at the campfire. Perhaps I suffer from lack of training in getting down on my knees regularly, but even one who did would see objections to doing so in the desert when getting down on cactus spines which are hid everywhere in the desert sands, or the mesquite spines which are about the moist places.

-Distichlis spicata forms a truly fine even close regular lawn at our campsite 'neath mesquite trees. It is a great joy to have a camp so free from sand.
