Salinas Valley

-Oenothera ovata Nutt. on the pasture[s] above San Juan (Gabilan Range) the fields are yellow with the flowers of this species which is now coming into full anthesis. I have never before seen so much of it. It covers thousands of acres and spots of it are quite yellow, so dense is the growth. These slopes are not plowed and its deep-seated storage roots like a carrot protect it fully against cattle. Its pods lying so low are not injured either.

-We cross the Gabilan Range, run down into the Salinas Valley, up which we drive. Every mile or less we see fields full of poppies; then they grow more dense; the poppies form shimmering lakes of gold under the bright white sunlight. These lakes

vary from 20 to 80 or even 80 or 100 acres, running out often into vague shallower margins with the green but sometimes sharply defined sometimes mere pools (or 2 or 5 acres. This continues all the way, at intervals of _ to 2 or 3 miles past Chualar, Gonzales and Soledad. The [apron?] fans at the mouths of the Santa Lucia ca_ons bear in a similar way gorgeous blots of yellow. Some great fields have Cream Cup areas or zones of white color mixed with the yellow color. It is wonderful. I never before saw so many or extensive areas covered with Eschscholtzia californica.

-Turned off the main road and drove to Mission Soledad. Its ruined walls are still sufficiently in evidence to show what an extensive mission establishment it once was. It lies on the banks of the Arroyo Seco,
