--The White Mountains were first botanized by W.H. Shockley. He is a mining engineer and was for a time at Candelaria, Esmeralda Co., Nev, not far from this place. He now lives at Palo Alto. He knows chinese and talks it well, having been an engineer in China. He married a classmate of Jos. Grinnell at Stanford.
