glabrous. Stamens 2, inserted in throat at summit of tube. The cor. has a distinct tube and a distinct throat. Calyx lobes lanceolate, 5_ equal or when 6 or 7 more or less unequal. Anthers connivent strongly by their edges, better say adnate, so as to form a tube about the style. The style with its terminal stigma pushes up through this tube. The anther cells are laterally dehiscent, but outside the tube, so that there is on the anther column a longitudinal band of pollen on each side; so that self-pollination would appear impossible.
Shrubs 1/2 to 2 feet high, the stem stops upward growth ending with a thorn, but develops short lateral branchlets at right angles which bear short thorns at right

angles and themselves end in thorns. There thorns are mostly white and make an ugly barrier above the flowers which are developed behind their points. The first flower which I picked and examined had 2 good stamens and a throd abortive stamen but as the flower was not saved, it seems likely now that my coarse field lens and my eye misled me. Anthers 2 normally.
