31_62 Chinese Camp, 1300 ft. ---------- - Motored today to Jamestown, Jimtown of Bret Harte days, thence on to Chinese Camp, where were wonderful flower fields for our delectation. The low slopes were all grassy with abundant feed; and wonderful with Calochortus luteus, -- wide gentle grassy slopes yellow with its fine flowers. It was very splendid; more of it than I have ever seen before! -- in one place, or indeed in all places. We found Odontostomum hartwegi on the serpentine, but also on a wet flat; its bulbs are dreadfully deep-seated and therefore very difficult to get up in a gravelly soil, as the below-ground portion of the stem is very tender or |
31_63 30 May 1915 ---------- brittle. An interesting plant here was Githopsis, no. 6311, with its very broadly campanulate corolla; with these flowers one could readily see that this is a "bell-flower" of the family of the same name. Godetias of two species, G. viminea no. 6318 (williamsonii) and G. (no. 6327) grow here, together. The buttercup at this point has 5 to 13 petals and softly-silky leaves, softly-silky to the touch! Chinese Camp is one mile from the railway station called Chinese. It is a decadent place. The stone stores with their iron doors are in ruins, except the Wells Fargo place. Two or three saloons form the chief industry as in all the Sierra foothill towns. |
