31_60 Columbia, 2200 ft. ---------- No. 6308. [Gladiolus segeteum Lawler _?_ -- spm. given to UC hb.] Grant Ranch. In a wheat field. Said to be spontaneous and not near any garden. -- Mrs. Wm. Grant. - Columbia is a quaint old decayed mining town. It was evidently well-built at one time since its stone and brick buildings are in fair repair. At one time it was the third city in California in population, Sacramento being second. It lost out against Sacramento for State Capital by only three votes they say. 31_61 29 May 1915 ---------- overgrown with roses and shrubbery and is very picturesque. The huge Catholic Church stands in a commanding position on the hill south. The ground below it is very rich in gold. The church would not sell sacred ground and the graves remained undisturbed. As no services were held in the church the Church finally sold to an English Company for a considerable sum. The company soon found that the whole place had been "gophered" by secret tunnels and passages! |
