31_54 Columbia 2200 ft. ---------- No. 6287. Calochortus venustus Dougl. Red-Brown eye-spot, with or without yellowish margin above. Whole lower portion brown spotted so densely that only a little dapple white shows. Gland square, whitish with a border of long brown hairs except on lower part. Eyespots on sepals. Petals sometimes with a defined large brown spot, often like a stain, above the eye, or the whole upper portion of petal clear white (usually so). Eye-spot a little below middle. This is a very beautiful thing and gives out a sense of luxury. The regularity |
31_55 May 28, 1915. Jackass Hill, Tuttletown ----------------------------- and unbroken character of the design in the centre of the flower, both sepal & petal bases being involved, suggests a Persian rug figure and hence exhales the sense of luxury. There are no two flowers exactly alike!, altho in a way they look quite alike because the general pattern is not departed from. -- Miss Gilkey collected these; Mrs. Wm. Grant assisting. Columbia Marble Quarry. Stems 1 to 4 ft. high; Corolla white, rarely pale crimson. No. 6288. Delphinium variegatum T. & G. var. apiculatum ["apiculatum" lined out]. Quite typical; i.e. seems to be exactly like the Solano Co. & Napa Valley royal purple type. Jackass Hill, Wm. Grant. |
