31_24 Cedar Mt., Alameda Co. ---------- along the top of the ridge. There was a grand outlook, through a gap into the San Joaquin Valley, north to the broad bulk of Mt. Diablo, imposing from this direction and now enriched by the deep purple color of late afternoon. The Sierra Nevada could not be seen but along their mighty crests white clouds were piled in magnificent array and held fast the eye with renewed memories of cloud battalions that held boyhood's eye in unwearied fascination. What lay south of the crest of Cedar Mt. I do not know. The rock formation, a red rock, is similar to that of Red Mt. in s.e. |
31_25 Nov. 13, 1914 ---------- Mendocino Co. The remarkable feature of the area was the sharp definition. So far as I could see form any position on the northerly side the cypress association formed a circular patch on top of the mt. No. 6223. [lined out: Hemizonia] [Holocarpha virgata (Gray) Keck.] ----- -Bear-weed. Another form of the common name for Chamaebatia foliolosa, which I like better than Bear Clover. Running Oak, I do not know. Both used by Mary Hallock Foote. The Valley Road, p. 174. ----- - Verbesina encelioides. Common in Salinas Valley near Metz. -- J.B. Hickmann in litt. Sept. '14 ----- - Bolander, H.N. cf. Bull. Torr. Club. 27:562 (1900). Degree Ph.D. conferred by Lafayette College at instance Dr. Torrey. |
