31_196 Barstow ---------- date of the structure I do not know but my estimate is about right. It contains only wire, no cut nails -- wire nails which were coming into use then; or in any event cut nails have not been in use in 25 years. - Cottonwood. Populus Fremonti. Sap wood very white; heart wood yellowish white. Does not split readily. Seasoned wood breaks off transversely a good deal when I attempt to split it. - Screw-bean (Prosopis glandulosa). Wood -- Heart wood in old trunks dark red; in younger trunks yellowish-brown. - The dawn this morning was succeeded by a sunrise of great beauty -- masses of clouds a deep apple-red |
31_197 29 Dec. 1915 ---------- predominating, a most unusual color. Before the dawn the dipper stood high, upside down, as near the zenith as it gets, at which place, on account of the hour, it is seldom seen. - Mr. Hemis says the snow drifted 4 ft. deep at Coolgardie and that there was more snow than in the total of his 15 yrs experience. He kept warm by burning Creosote_ roots, raised with a crowbar, the tops cut off entirely. They burn like coal. Formerly he used the "carbonized" wood the Yucca__ which he thinks is due to a disease. This wood can broken by a hammer like coal, but is now scarce. ----- _ Larrea mexicana. __ Yucca arborescens. |
