smooth as a meadow. Under this manzanita crown is provided a nurse bed for Arbutus menziesii, Quercus agrifolia and more particularly Q. Kelloggii, and Pseudotsuga taxifolia. These finally overtop or crowd out the manzanita. In favored spots or where the growth is scattered this species is often found developing as a tree, in truly arboreous form, with distinct trunk and shapely crown. I have measured the following:
No. 1. By Stingy Stile, Eden Trail, circ. at ground = 3 ft. 7 in., at 3 ft. = 3 ft. 6 in. at 4 ft. the trunk branches into four arms. Height = 15 ft.

No. 2. On shoulder hill, to right of Eden trail going up and about 35 yards from Stingy Stile. Trunk 2 ft. h., circ. at base = 3 ft. 4 in., at 1 1/2 ft. above base = 3 ft. 6 in. Height = 18 feet. Trunk branches into five arms.
No. 3. Southerly end of Oak Crest ridge, near the cottages on extreme edge of ridge. Tree on path from Sanitarium, 22 ft. h. Trunk 2 ft. 11 in. circ. at ground (smallest diam.), branching at 20 in. into 2 forks.
