31_170 Sanitarium, Napa Co., Howell Mt. ---------- - Saw three flocks of geese yesterday, migrating south. About 75 to 150 in each flock. Apparently brant. High in air. Heard another flock today. - Arctostaphylos manzanita. Its leaves astringent, like all the species of A., and used as a rural remedy for dysentery. -- Sanford the Nurse. Nurses are sometimes sent out to collect Eriodictyon glutinosum. - The autumn colors here are now rather fine, for California The maples have yellowed and relieve beautifully the Douglas Fir woods on Howell Mt. There is of course only one maple species here (Acer macrophyllum) |
31_171 Oct. 20, 1915 ---------- The Black Oaks are now yellowing and help to give a more festive aspect to the slopes. By the middle of October the Quercus douglasii had burnt by the sun's heat to a deep red brown and made color spots on the rocky slopes. But with the rains all that is lost and we now have the lighter tints of autumn colors. - Arctostaphylos manzanita. This is the prevailing manzanita on all the lower slopes of the Napa Range.
