31_128 Strawberry, Tuolumne Co. 5400 ft. ---------- No. 6467. Cephalanthera oregana. Reich. [C. austinae] Whole plant white! Leafless. Perianth white. Lower (or lateral) sepals largest, ovate, acute. Upper sepal and upper petals, similar in shape to lower sepals but somewhat smaller, Lip with a hinged middle portion which is slightly down-curved with slightly upturned sides forming a broad channel, which has three low longitudinal ridges on it. The lower (basal) [?] portion of lip has two lateral wings turned inwards alongside the column. (= C. Austinae Heller). Collected by Miss Perry and Mrs. A.L. Grant. They think it is not parasitic. - Snake Lily, a folk-name for Brodiaea volubilis in Tuolumne Co. -- Mrs. Morgan. |
31_129 July 11, 1915 ---------- No. 6468. Collinsia torreyi Gray. Upper lip at throat with a pair of horn-like processes which form an almost circular entrance to throat on upper side. The lateral petals of lower lip have a sharp pair of processes, one from each on the inner side. These, the pair, diverge a bit. They stand a little below the processes on upper side and the whole mechanism seems like an insect guide. Throat not saccate, very broad, only a little oblique from tube. Cotyledons still persistent, very large. No. 6469. Brodiaea [= Triteleia] ixioides Wats. I see no technical dif. in fl. betw. this small plant and the plant coll. at Columbia, no. 6303. |
