No. 6437. Antirrhinum glandulosum Lindl. not A. virga Gray. [= A. multiflorum] Stamens geniculate at very base, or rather just above base, the upper densely short-hairy on cap of knee, the lower pair hairy in crotch of knee. Lower pair of filaments slightly longer, their portions above knee dilated a little, and (like the upper pair) slightly very slightly or obscurely hairy. Corolla pink, the distended lower lip closing the tube obliquely (!), upper lip equaling it, merely notched, the short lobes obtuse. Lower lip, its lobes short, broad, obtuse, the distention strongly saccate. Flowers ascending, 8 to 9 lines long. palate fits into this so as to close tube quite closely! Ovary white-glandular-hairy, except a green zone at very base; style similarly hairy. Upper calyx lobe longer than the others but not much longer. Corolla hairy, esp. on back of upper lip, its tube very slightly or obscurely hairy on lower side. Style tapering upward into the minute stigma. Only one plant seen, this with numerous stems and many dead stems of last year at ground. Stems 4 to 6 ft. high, the tallest one 6 ft. 11 1/2 inches! Longest calyx-lobe 4 lines long, a little more than half length of the corolla.
No. 6438. Ailanthus glandulosa This forms considerable thickets in all the mining country about Columbia and Sonora. It spreads spontaneously by root-sprouting.
