31_110 Tuttletown, Tuolumne Co. ---------- - At Tuttletown, 1/4 mile below, at foot of dump of Patterson Mine, there are three Cork Oak trees. Planted in 1858 according to the label on a sample of the bark in the Jamestown display of Tuolumne products. The trees measure as follows: Height Trunk Height Circumference at 6 ft. West Tree 72 feet 26 ft. 60 inches Central Tree 78 feet 30 ft. 62 " East Tree 52 feet 18 ft. 58 " The trees stand in a row in the bottom of a gulch. They have the best of soil and moisture conditions, and are fine healthy trees. The trunks on the two largest trees have been somewhat abused in taking off bark. 31_111 June 26, 1915 ---------- driven in to the ultimate injury of the trunk. Bark averages 1 3/4 to 2 1/8 inches in thickness. ---------- June 28, 1915 Rode down the river road to Parrott's Ferry, Stanislaus River. There is an Adenostoma fasciculatum belt which we pass thru. We also find a great quantity of Heteromeles arbutifolia in fl. The flowering seems to me to be very white as compared with plants at Berkeley. Parrott's Ferry is, of course, replaced by a bridge now-a-days, but there isn't much travel over the road since the railway came into Sonora. |
