31_108 Tuttletown, Tuolumne Co. ---------- No. 6435. Collinsia tinctoria Hartw. Corolla white with purple markings (lines and dots). Whorls (largest) with 8 or 9 or 11 flowers! Flowers deflexed a little below the horizontal. The distention on upper side of tube (properly throat) makes a very sharp angle on lower side. It is indeed like a broad spur on upper side! Stamens 3 long, of approximately equal length, the fourth shorter. -- This is not correct. At first 2 long, 2 shorter, the 2 shorter elongate unequally in point of time but become of equal length eventually and equalling the other 2 stamens. Stigma one, minute, smaller in diameter than the style. |
31_109 June 26, 1915 ---------- Lateral lobes of lower lip with a saccate process projecting downward on inner side. Upper lip with a pair of showy [?] callous crests at angle of throat or mouth of throat. Upper lip very very short. Upper stamens very sparingly and shortly hairy, -- only a few short hairs which require care to see. Middle portion of lateral lobes with soft tangled hairs. Upper lip 1/2 to 1 1/2 lines long above throat, a transverse crest at its junction with throat, the crest interrupted at middle and developed at each end into a pronounced scale. |
