30_96 Shay's Well, c. 400 ft. Mohave Desert because all our water was gone except a little in the canteens. About 7:20 we came in sight of the windmill which pumps water_ from the bed of the draw into a cement tank for the cattle. Acacia gregii grows here. It is not yet in leaf except occasinally. It is one of the most annoying of the desert shrubs because it looks harmless but its claws are vicious. _[cont. p 98] - Ericameria monactis McCl. 30_97 Nay 15m 1914 - Round-headed Rabbit Brush (No. 5898) leaves strictly erect along stem Narrow headed Rabbit Brush (No. 5907) leaves spreading-ascending or curved-ascending. The later[sic] is the more beautiful. - One & one-half miles s.e. of Shay's Windmill we stop to gather Siesta Grass (Pleuraphis rigida Thurb.) for the horses. It is a beautiful mesa adorned with the two species of Rabbit Brush nos. 5898 & 5907. See p 96 at foot. in full flower which are very ornamental; Juniperus calif., Yucca mohav. & brevifolia; Eriogonum polifolium; Lycium cooperi & andersonii_; Coleogyne ramossisma[sic]; Choya; A line of small rocky buttes tops the [??] S.W. horizon one mile away while farther s.w. San Gorgonio, snow-mantled, crowns the lovely _ = L pallidum not andersonii. |
