30_66 Ord Mt. 4954 ft. Summit. - Doc Smith says that when he was near Death Valley two or three years ago a party came in collecting the "Amargosa Lily" who said he received 50 cents apiece for the bulbs. - Ephedra viridis, no., grows in the rocky outcrops or rock peaks on Ord, even to the highest one. - Willets tells Miss Waterman of a Red Poppy in a ca_on near Willow Spring. This tale excited one whole party on the occasion of our first visit to Ord. He told this to Miss W. at Doggett and we speculated a great deal about it when we drove up. As we came near the Mt. & saw the road bordered with the wonderful Apricot mallow we decided that this was the "Red Poppy". But Willets |
30_67 10 May 1914. expressed almost amazement that this should be called a poppy and, both momentarily crestfallen and somewhat expectant, we started over to the ca_on by Willow Spring where the rare poppy was said to be at the top of the first ridge we came upon the flaming red of Calochortus kennedyi. This then was the poppy! and instead of going on to Willow Spring Ca_on we went to the summit of Ord. On return to camp Smith told us somewhat informingly that this was not a poppy, that the real red poppy which he knew had a single flower to a stem 3 ft. h. which bore somewhat maple-like or thistle-like leaves.
