No. 5856. Sphaeralcea no! see below. We drove for two miles or more through an avenue of these with the plants forming round clusters 1 to 4 ft broad. Stems many from the base and with many flowers. Very showy and highly attractive, giving a lively and glowing effect to the wagon trail. = S. ambigua Gray.
No. 5857. Platystemon californicus Bth. With sulphur-yellow spots at apex of petals and a little at base, the markings of yellow varible in size and development; or the petals wholly cream color, right on plants in the same colony. The plants show flowers all of one kind in any event.

Corollas small, whitish or nearly white.

Corolla tubular - funnelform, pink, a very beautiful color.

Larger-form corolla, whitish with yellow tips to segments. The upper pair of segments stand erect, with approximate tips. The 2 processes from upper pair of samens are long and bear, each, 4 bright to rather translucent cylindric glands.

Smaller-flower. Cor. duller with brownish tips to segments, or [concolored]. Processes on stamens are sgorter and with 1 to 3 cylindric translucent glands.
