30_186 Barstow excellent forage grass is Sporobolus airoides. This is eaten by stock about Barstow where it is found in alkaline flats and forms beavy stools. I noticed it especially in the grove of Palms, the first ca_on east of Thousand Palms Ca_on, where it formed such heavy stools as to make the ground hummocky between and among the Palms. Our animals fed on it greedily here. It was the only forage at this point. Distichlis spicata is a feed which cattle and horses eat greedily. There was a beautiful stand of it, |
30_187 May 31, 1914 as fine a I ever saw, in a young state, in Thousand Palms Ca_on and the animals fell upon it and ate steadily, paying little attention to other plants, a few of which might have been favored. Manson says it has a strong tendency to bloat stock and that they grow thin feeding upon it. Coville in the Death Valley Report says that the grass was eaten freely because of the salty taste but the feed gave the animlas no strength for hard work. - Berkely, June, 1914. |
