30_176 Barstow No. 6146. Oenothera primiveris Gray; not caespitosa Nutt. Petals clear yellow, obcordate. Stigmas slender, rotately spreading. Ovary 1/4 length of calyx-tube. Sandy washes. No. 6147. Verbena goodingiii Briq. No. 6148. Lycium pallidum Miers. Leaves large and fleshy. Stems spreading or ascending. Berries large (to 5 lines diam.), globose, or a little depressed-globose, slightly yellowish, the berries light-colored. No. 6149. Gilia virgata Stend. var. Low or mound-like roundish plants. Camped last night some five miles northerly from Oro Grande. Went on today to Barstow, a long ride over country that is familiar as to vegetation. |
30_177 May 30, 1914. - S.B. Parish says: "If you go to La Jolla call on the Misses Scripps. They have commissioned Valentine to make paintings of the wild flowers of S. Calif. He has done at least 500 now. He is a very careful worker and the results are very accurate." - Gilia aurea Nutt. No. 6143. Cont. from p 175. Cor. [corolla] lobes elliptic. Throat funnelform above the short tube. Throat orange-yellow above a black base, the tube whitish. Cor. clear yellow. Stamens inserted at sinuses of cor. at summit of throat. |
