30_110 Not Cottonwood Mts. _ n. of Indio. = Lookout Mt. !!! - We camped last night near the first summit of the Cottonwood Mts. Dry camp. There was no Gietta Grass, had been none since Twenty-nine Palms. We fed the Gietta Grass we had cut and in the morning the remnant of alfalfa hay and a feed of barley. Last night we drove until 7:30, dark, but the last mile the animals were so tired that it took a full hour to drag the load. Of course both of us walked. _ I apply this name to the range south of 29 Palms. Probably the Cottonwood Mts. proper are further east, n.e. of Indio, but apparently connected with the mt. that we passed over. Mendenhall, Desert Watering Places p. 78, says of the mt. "unnamed". See p. 108. |
30_111 17 May 1914. -Chilopsis saligna, many sprawling or ascending or erect stems from a common base, making a brod crown resting on the ground. - Isomeris arborea, 3 - 4 ft. h. very heavy with fruit and making a striking picture of laden pods. - Acacia gregii Gray. - Simmondsia californica Nutt. - About 8 miles from Twenty-nine Palms we come to an unmarked fork in the road and are in great doubt. We take left hand for 1/2 mile. I stop and put horses to feed on Gietta grass and Matthews goes on to find a reported sign board ahead. It is now 7:30 am. We broke camp early and got off at 5:20 am. |
