28_44 Mt. Tamalpais [Jan. 9, 1914] Pickeringia montana, Nutt., sprouting from root-collar on cleared strip-not from trunk-stem. Sphacele calycina stump sprouting-also stem sprouting! Also sprouting in cleared strip. Ditto. Adenostoma fasciculatum. Quercus wislizenii var. frutescens. Likewise stump sprouting from root-collar, very spiny-modulate leaves. No. 5711. Arctostaphylos glandulosa Eastw. Stump sprouting from root crown. Root crown 3/4 to 1 1/4 or 2 ft. [feet] broad, showing effects of many fires. Pickeringia montana, sprouts from roots, especially small roots, freely. Covering sides of railway cuts in spots |
28_45 [Mt. Tamalpais] Jan. 9, 1914 in this way. Root very soft and fleshy and brittle, thick, and very much thickened just below surface of ground. Ceanothus rhysiflorus, roots lying along the surface of the ground and easily fire killed. Tree in fire lane, stump not sprouting altho [although] no fire!! Stump sprouting on burn: plants above ground quite fire killed. Rhamnus californica Arctostaphylos glandulosa Quercus wislizenii var. frutescens Eriodictyon glutinosum Bth. Vaccinium ovatum Dendromecon rigidum [?rigida], tap root very stout, fleshy, brittle, yellow juice. Runs straight down for four or five feet at least. |
