He had always been interested in botany and now took up botanical work under the Dept of Forestry but was later transferred to College of Hawaii where he is now, being in effect professor of botany. 28_43 [Berkeley] 10 Dec. 1913 ["...] Japanese, but Rock knew how to write Chinese and as an educated Japanese of course knows Chinese we established communication with them in that way. Rock has been working successfully on the dry area floras of the islands which is very much richer in species than the rain forest. Rock has been working mainly in forest trees and has found several new species. He has a special interest in the tree lobelias. In his critical work he has been assisted by loans of type material from Royal Bot. Gards. [Botanical Gardens] Berlin, Gray Herbarium and elsewhere." |
