Flowers pure white, with yellow centre, "4 or 5 inches across", acc. [according to] Filcher.
Prof. [Professor] Filcher's estimate of size is too large and he merely meant to indicate that the flowers are showy and noticeable like hollyhocks to which he compared them.

Stems acutely triangular.
Ruscus aculeatus, red colored branches used for decoration in shops at Stockton.

Middle River.
Filcher says the peat is 20 ft. [feet] deep with a sandy clay bottom.
The peat will readily burn and may burn for weeks and months and become a menace.
Into such sink-holes horses may go down and be lost.
The soil is of course very spongy
