Prof. [Professor] Filcher's estimate of size is too large and he merely meant to indicate that the flowers are showy and noticeable like hollyhocks to which he compared them. 6 ft. h!

Cyperus virens Michx. Stems acutely triangular. Ruscus aculeatus, red colored branches used for decoration in shops at Stockton.
Middle River. Filcher says the peat is 20 ft. [feet] deep with a sandy clay bottom. The peat will readily burn and may burn for weeks and months and become a menace. Into such sink-holes horses may go down and be lost. The soil is of course very spongy
