28_26 Alameda [20 Sept 1913] is flooded by high tide. A little Jaumea carnosa occurs. There was no Scripus or Cyperacea of any kind observed. Oenothera cheiranthifolia occurred in the low sand beach south shore of Bay Farm Island, as did also Abronia umbellata and Fraseria. Also Baccharis consanguinea (prostrate). Suaeda californica. Low shrubs 3 to 10 ft. broad spreading with ascending as erect branchlets, [one] to 3 ft. [high]. Rather common on Bay Farm Island near the bridge to Alameda and correspondingly on the Alameda shore. 28_27 [Alameda] 20 Sept, 1913. No. 5685. Spartina foliosa Trin. Grass, in mudflats, overrun by tide. Azalea [Rhododendron occidentale]. Miss M.L. Hutchinson has been painting [wildflowers] at Eureka. She says the pink [flowered] Azalea is smaller than the white [flowered] one of Yosemite, has more flowers, is compacter in habit, has smaller leaves, etc. I think she said something about the odor [differences]. 22 Sept, 1913. Miss M.L. Hutchinson has made hundreds if not thousands of paintings which she sells at _2.00 apiece. The Los Angeles library has taken several hundred, the State Library has taken some, she has 500 now to be sold at _2.00 each in a lot. They are rather pretty but of little botanical value. -over- |
