Sept. 8-11, 1913 There was a vast difference in the attitude of the Continental and American botanists towards plants. The Germans were almost wildly enthusiastic, discussing excitedly each new find and differing good naturedly in their opinions. And collecting! Always collecting!! Everything! Laying their hands on the poorest scraps that I would not look at! Godetia viminea 2 [inches high]! in [flower] late fall dwarfs eaten down by cows! And wanting to know the name of everything! The Americans collected not at all! Unless to ask names and throw the material away. If you gave Clements a questionmark with a name he didn't put it down, the questionmark. Both he and Cowles want things named in the field offhand accurately. Rather a task for a critical taxonomist. Cont. vol. 27, p. 190.
