28_200 Non-credit to Jepson's Manual and other books. The fashion of not giving credit to Jepson's books was first established by H.M. Hall. One of the ways by which I know that authors have been using my books is re. the common names of native plants which are my own invention and could not be had from any other source. Now, there is no "patent" on common names as in the case of Latin names and one cannot and should not object to their use-to their being copied. In fact that is what one wants of course. There is, then, no objection whatsoever. Nor would I ever complain of credit not being given. It is not of sufficient importance to make complaint. But it is interesting, especially under the circumstances, because-why?-because it is amusing. The following have used these names but never given credit: Hall, Flora of Yosemite Hall, Carnegie Publications Gilkey, Spring Flora nw. Ore. (uses "Rancheria Clover." Knoche, Quar. Soc. Cal. Pioneers, 6:180-181. See my note in separate reprint (weeds file). cf. also p. 199. The main point is that the first two authors used my floras in general without giving credit. (cf.
