28_110 Private Herbaria Piper Herbarium, purchased by state of Washington. Proc. Biol. Soc. Wash. 41:192 -cf. 26:191,199. 39:19, 102. 38:188, 192. of this set of Field Books. Dr. E.J. Durand, whom I knew well when I was a student in botany at Cornell, developed a large herbarium of discomycetes. He was at Cornell as an officer, at Missouri State Univ., at Minnesota State Univ. (chairman of dept?) where he died. His herbarium (12,000 spms [specimens]) was purchased by Cornell. cf. Sci. 57:298. cf. F.B. Mas, 1928, vol. 46, p. 167. Private Hepatic Herbarium of M.A. Howe made in Cal. _while an officer of Univ. of Cal.; sold to Miss [?G.G.?] Haynes in 1909; by her presented to N.Y. Bot. Gard. [New York Botanical Gardens] in 1915. cf. sci. 42:689. Professor Bruce Fink, labored on lichens at Miami University, Oxford, Ohio, sold to Univ. of Michigan (cf. news note in Science, 19 Apr. 1929). |
28_111 Private Herbaria Dean E.D. Merrill brought to Cal. [California] from the Philippine Islands, where he was employed in the Bureau of Science as a government employee, a perfectly enormous private collection, perhaps 200,000 sheets! cf. F.B. 50:46. See ante 14: 178. See index no. 3 of Field Books under Herbaria. S.F. Blake, while employed in U.S. Bur. of Plant Industry, wrote: "I shall keep some for myself."
