Antirrhinum coulterianum Benth. Waterman Canon. No. 5555. Oenothera contorta Dougl. San B. No. 5556. Diplacus Mimulus longiflorus (Nutt.) Grant. Det. A.L.G. Corolla cream-yellow, sometimes pale salmon, twice as long as calyx. Inner lobes of the lobes of upper lip twisted a little. Two salmon blotches on lower lip. 27_99 15-23 May 1913. [San Bernardino Co.] ---------- No. 5557. Salvia apiana Jepson. Upper lip almost obsolete, lower much developed, elevated into a conspicuous palate and curved upward so as to close entrance to throat, the lateral lobes small, the middle lobe fringed. Stamens long and very widely spreading, adnate by their lower portion to the lower lip (on its exposed part) Style widely divergent from the long stamens. The stamens are in their free portions wholly exserted. Style and fils. glabrous. -- Bees alighting on the flowers bear down the palate by their weight so that they can thrust their tongues into the tube. The bees pay no attention to the color or state of the corolla. They enter one wilted-brown and past anthesis as freely as a fresh white corolla: but if the corolla is past anthesis they leave it almost instantly. -- The bushes are tall fine-looking plants, the wand-like flowering stems with terminal racemose panicle arising from a woody white-leafy base and diverging a little. -- San B. near Waterman Canon. |
