27_78 Mohave Desert, New York Mts. Barnwell ---------- c. 4000 ft. No. 5460. Oenothera caespitosa Nutt. Cor. white, trifle over 1 inch. Pods warty at angles. No. 5461. Hosackia wrightii (Greene) var. multicaulis Ottley. [= Lotus argyraeus var. multicaulis] Cor. lemon yellow, ochre on outside, fading more or less reddish-brown. Perennial. [No. 5492. Pentstemon centranthifolius Cor. scarlet, its lobes equal, closely turned back in sets of 2 & 3.] See p. 85. No. 5462. Carduus [Cirsium californicum] Heads whitish. Stem simple bi- or tri-cephalous on moderately long peduncles. No. 5463. Gilia virgata var. pygmaea Jepson. Cor. very pale lilac. Stamens exserted from throat a little, inserted a little way down. |
27_79 10 May 1913 [San Bernardino Co.] ---------- - Chilopsis saligna, in stream bed northerly from Barnwell. "They" are now leafless and both at a distance and near at hand look exactly like scraggly gray willows. The bark is smoother & gray except on the old trunks at base where is dark & roughish. The shrubs are 10 ft. h. - Phlox stansburyi Hel., no. 5490. See p. 85 The similitude of this and a Garden Pink is very remarkable or of the single large flowering native pinks. The shape & set of the flower, the inflorescence, the foliage -- all conspire to say in loudest terms that it is a pink -- one cannot get away from this feeling, altho one knows all the time it is a Phlox.
