----------

- Pluchea sericea. Arrow-weed. The windbreak at Waterman Ranch looks white and dead from the frost. Killed quite to ground but will sprout
- The Screwbean Mesquite_ is the wisest tree on the desert says Miss Waterman. The river groves are all in naked winter conditions, quite leafless still. The Cottonwood is in full leaf, but the Mesquite will not move until it is quite safe. The last three nights have been cold, -- ice formed each night!
- Swallow nest Bend is the name Miss Waterman gives to the camp below Ehrenberg on Ariz. shore in mouth of arroyo with cliffs on either hand. "We went up the arroyo bed in the morning", says Miss Waterman, "and the queer Corona de Cristo looked like the smoke of camp-fires!" That is Dalea spinosa! "The crown of thorns of the Crucifixion as I saw it", says Miss Waterman, "on the Rivieria in Italy and it is in Palestine". So if intelligent travelers confuse things, the Mexican peasants may be excused!
