27_22 Berkeley ---------- - Eriogonum covillei Small Bull. Torr. Club. 25:42. is based on Coville's 1656 n.w. of Whitney Mdws. i.e. Siberian Pass. Purpus 1426, "rocky slopes Mt. Whitney" answers to the descrip. & it is a dwarf form of E. umbellatum. I am confident it is these dwarf or unusual states that furnish most of the present-day new species. Consider the Coast Ranges this year! and the way in which moisture is spotted about. What a harvest of new species there ought to be!! It is so, also, in the Sierras The Purpus plant is 1/2 to |
27_23 1 Apr. 1913 ---------- 4 inches high. The leaves are in rosettes on short stems as in the dwarf monocephalous states of E. umbellatum. Flowers not reduced, attenuate at base but not strongly. - Eriogonum corymbosum Benth. Attributed to Cal. east side Sierra in Bot. Cal. Coville (Death Val. Bot.) says on east slope Sierra Nev. near Lone Pine. Purpus 1919 is from Cottonwood Ck. Canon which is near Lone Pine and is E. microthecum! Doubtless Coville's plant is the same.
